The arrival of ChatGPT in late 2022 marked a turning point across many sectors, including search engines. Since then, Google has intensified its efforts to stay at the forefront of artificial intelligence with Gemini, its most advanced model, and its integration into popular tools such as Gmail and Google Docs.
However, the most significant move has come recently: the integration of results generated by Gemini directly into the core of Google’s flagship product — the search engine.
Now, in many of the searches we carry out on Google, prominently displayed Google AI Overviews appear: summaries generated by Google's AI that provide a direct and useful answer to our queries.
What does Google AI Overviews offer?
Google AI Overviews offers a summarised view of the most relevant information on a topic or question, using generative AI to provide helpful responses accompanied by links that allow users to explore further content directly from the web.
In addition, when users have several questions at once, they can ask them all in a single search. Thanks to this tool, the process becomes more efficient, not only delivering quick answers but also helping users discover the value of available content and websites. AI Overviews is now available in over 120 countries and territories, and in 11 languages.
Moreover, it’s worth highlighting that with Google AI Overviews, searching on Google is no longer just about finding answers — it can also help you plan. This tool lets users explore destinations, discover activities, compare options, and build a personalised itinerary based on their interests. All directly within the search engine. And with just a few clicks, this itinerary can be saved or exported to Google Docs or Gmail, making it easy to review, edit or share. A simple and practical way to start organising your plans right from the search page.
Some users can now also access Google’s AI Mode in Search — a more advanced experience that goes beyond AI Overviews.
A step beyond Google AI Overviews: Google’s AI Mode
AI Mode is Google’s most advanced AI-powered search experience. It allows users to ask complex questions, break them down into subtopics, and receive detailed answers with helpful links for further exploration. Unlike AI Overviews, it provides more sophisticated reasoning and new ways of interaction.
It draws on Google's deep understanding of the web to offer answers supported by high-quality content. When a reliable response can't be generated, the tool simply shows relevant links. Although it’s still in development and may make mistakes, users are encouraged to share feedback to help refine the experience. Google will continue expanding its features and improving this new way of searching.
Three ways to use Google AI Overviews in your business
Google AI Overviews has many uses, but these three stand out for their ability to make a real difference:
1.- Optimise information search
With AI-generated answers directly in the search engine, marketing, development or sales teams can quickly access key information about trends, competitors or relevant concepts, without the need to browse multiple sources. This can also save valuable time in early-stage research.
2.- Inspire content ideas
The immediate synthesis offered by AI helps generate fresh, relevant ideas for campaigns, articles or corporate materials by clearly showing what users are searching for in real time, accelerating the creative process.
3.- Plan projects more efficiently
Having access to instantly organised itineraries, timelines or resources within the search engine helps structure projects, events or training sessions with greater speed and accuracy. Plus, the ability to export this information directly to Google Docs or Gmail makes collaboration and follow-up seamless.
